Niemeyer Center
Oscar Niemeyer, the Brazilian architect, was conferred with the Prince of Asturias Award in 1989. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary, Niemeyer offered the Prince of Asturias Foundation the best present an artist of his stature could give: the design of a building. What started out as merely a few curves on a blank page would later become an ambitious cultural project the seat of which Niemeyer himself has classified as his most important project in Europe, and his only one in Spain.
The official website of the Center is www.niemeyercenter.org
Board of Trustees
The Foundation Oscar Niemeyer Cultural Center is governed by a Board of Trustees set up in December 2006. The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Avilés agreed on the integration into this Foundation on December 24, 2006. Other trustees are the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the Government of the Principality of Asturias and the City Council of Avilés.
Access Gateway
On August 27, 2010 the 70 metres long footbridge built by the Port Authority was oficially opened. It connects the Niemeyer Centre with the estuary promenade.
Since the inauguration of the International Centre on March 25, 2011, the gates to the footbrige are opened from Tuesday to Sunday. On Mondays the gates and the Niemeyer Centre remain shut.
