Dredging project to increase the draught from the entrance to the Port of Avilés up to the working circle

Description of project

In recent years, Avilés Port Authority has been carrying out a series of actions in the Port of Avilés aimed at improving operations and extending the shipping traffic services on offer. Among these actions, increasing draught levels at the newly Extended and Prolonged Raíces Dock, the Renovation of the Southern and Western Quays at San Juan Dock, as well as the widening of the entrance canal at the point known as Curva de Pachico, deserve special mention.

As a result of growing demands on the Port, in addition to the desire to ensure its competitiveness, it proved necessary to increase the port draught to 11.20 m, given that heretofore this factor had represented a serious hindrance to the commercial running of the Port.

This dredging work enables ships with greater draught to enter the port. Furthermore, it affords improved safety on providing greater tidal range protection with respect to the working of ships that are entering or leaving the Port. Neither, should we overlook the fact that it will increase the number of operational hours for the bigger ships that currently anchor in the Port of Avilés.

The aim of this project is to increase the draught from the mouth of the Port to the working or manoeuvre circle from -10.00 m, in order to achieve a depth of –11.00 m.
