Port development of the right-hand shore of the Avilés estuary: Phase II

Description of project

The new infrastructure consists of a quay with its corresponding services surface area to be developed on the right-hand shore of the area, immediately to the south of the current Phase I work on the Pedro Menéndez canal in front of the fishing dock. The new quay will enable the docking of ships of up to 72,000 TPM, to which end a -14.00 m draught has been designed for the quay (in reference to the Port of Avilés zero).
The width of the canal between the new quay and the fishing dock will be to the order of 225.53 m.
The structure consists of rows of 4 piles with a diameter of 1.65 m, joined by a pile cap beam between the axes every 9 m. Pre-stressed, pre-fabricated beams are supported by these pile cap beams joined by a 20 cm compression layer concreted on site. Containment of the upper part of the esplanade is achieved by means of an “L” wall”.
The dock equipment includes: bollards, defences, ladders and services such as an esplanade for freight storage, irrigation, fire protection, electricity and lighting installations necessary for this dock to operate as a freight terminal.
